Elements of Music-Basic Terms-Melody

    * A sequence of single notes arranged in time; generally what you sing is a melody.
* Music notation arranges melody notes horizontally from left to right.

Scales

    * A sequence of different notes arranged in ascending and/or descending order
* Most Western European scales are seven different notes arranged a half or whole step apart.
* Most melodies are derived from scales; therefore they are the ABC’s of music.

Scales

Harmony

    * An arrangement of two or more notes that occur simultaneously
* Generally referred to as chords or harmonies, we are used to hearing the piano or guitar create two or more note sonorities.
* Music notation indicates chords (or harmonies) by stacking notes vertically.
* Most conventional chords are made up of the first, third, and fifth notes of a scale, thus each note in a chord can be referred to as the root (first note in the scale), third and fifth; and if the chord contains more than three notes (often the case in jazz), the designation can be expanded to include the seventh, ninth, eleventh, and thirteenth. These harmonies are called seventh chords, ninth chords, and so on…

Harmony….

The Beach Boys, Surf Music, and the British Invasion

Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys

    * Formed in 1961 by Brian Wilson, his two brothers, a cousin, and a friend in Hawthorne, California
* Brian Wilson was the guiding spirit of the band during the group’s first decade.
* The defining model of the Beach Boys:
o Demonstrate mastery of early rock ’n’ roll
o Create original material based on and extending those styles
o Branch out beyond the forms, sounds, and lyrics of traditional rock ’n’ roll to create something truly unique

Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys

    * The songs of the Beach Boys enshrined Wilson’s somewhat mythical version of California in the consciousness of young Americans.
o “Surfin’ Safari”
o “Surfer Girl”
o “The Warmth of the Sun”
o “California Girls”
* Wilson’s vision was inclusive even though it remained place specific.

Brian Wilson’s Journey from Imitation, through Emulation, to Innovation

    * The Beach Boys’ first Top 10 hit, the famous “Surfin’ USA” (Number Three, 1963), simply borrows the music of Chuck Berry’s 1958 hit “Sweet Little Sixteen” with new words.
* The Beach Boys’ next hit, “Surfer Girl” (Number Seven, 1963), reinvigorated the sound and spirit of the doo-wop ballad by infusing it with California beach content.
* “Fun, Fun, Fun”

What does this program do?

    * Learn to Play Guitar Essentials is ideal for beginning guitar players. Whether you are an aspiring musician wanting classical guitar training or an ambitious rock-and-roller looking for more traditional instruction, this program will help you to achieve your goals in an effective, easy, and fun way.

What else does it do?

    * Every chord is featured both visually and audibly so that you can learn quickly and check your progress along the way.
* There is also a built in tuner to make sure your notes are right each and every time.

How is it affective in Music Therapy?

    * As a Music Therapy Major, learning to play the acoustic guitar is an essential requirement. In the addition of practicing your principal instrument at a university, students must treat the guitar as their other principal instrument.
* Sometimes, students need extra help with forming chords, learning to tune, and gaining confidence on the guitar.
* This program is a quick and easy way for students to increase their abilities on guitar.

Music Therapy…continued 

What is the Guitar Chord Learning System? uitar,Chord,Learning,System

A solution for teaching basic chord positioning techniques utilizing a guitar fretboard with embedded LEDs.

    * Chord Progression sequence of a song is transferred to GCLC from a Computer terminal Program
* Once sequence is loaded, User controls LED Fretboard display with a Foot Pedal Input

Function Example

    * The LED fretboard lights with respect to stored chord progression
* The LCD displays PRESENT CHORD

PRESENT CHANNEL

NEXT CHORDS IN PROGRESSION

CHANNEL 1: Am C G

Using the GCLS

    * Step 1:

Establish all GCLS device connections. Connect serial output to PC.

Using the GCLS

    * Step 2:

Open a terminal emulator, such as Hyper Terminal. Power GCLS Unit.
